An All-Stravinsky Program
The San Francisco Symphony welcomes St. Petersburg's world renowned Mariinsky Orchestra for a poetic program filled with the melodic mastery and rhythmic energy of iconic Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Lead by the Mariinsky's artistic director Valery Gergiev, the ensemble will be joined by the ivory-tickling virtuoso Denis Matsuev, an award-winning performer of jaw-dropping power, poise and technical prowess who's rapidly establishing himself as one of the most prominent performers of his generation.
The evening begins with Stravinsky's Fireworks, an early composition labelled an 'Orchestral Fantasy' thanks to its four minute duration. This is followed by the turbulent Symphony In Three Movements, the composer's first composition written after his emigration to the United States. Denis Matsuev will then take centre stage with a prodigious performance of the demanding Capriccio for Piano and Orchestra, followed by the rousing Symphony In C and the rapturous reveries of a young Stravinsky's breakthrough work The Firebird Suite.
