A high seas saga like no other, Benjamin Britten's Billy Budd sails into San Francisco in fall 2019 in this new to town production from legendary director Michael Grandage. With a libretto by E.M Forster and Eric Crozier adapted from Herman Melville's 1923 novella, we follow the titular Billy as he jauntily enters service on the English Navy's H.M.S Indomitable. Once aboard, the naive young sailor soon comes up against injustices even his charming outlook can't dodge. An emotionally charged and richly textured work marked as Britten's finest, discover a story of innocence lost and envy triumphant that will stick with you long after the ship makes port.

The young beauty Manon is spirited away on her journey to a convent when she and her companion, her brother Lescaut, break up the trip with a stop at a country inn. Whilst Lescaut complains of his duty, Manon soon becomes the center of the attentions of two men. One the young handsome student Geronte, with nothing but love to share - and another, the far more dangerous Des Grieux, a wealthy older man who is used to getting what he wants. The second of two operas based on Abbe Prevost's controversial novel, the boiling passions of Puccini's adaptation became an early sign of his bubbling genius.

The War Memorial Opera House was built and opened in 1932, providing a home for the San Francisco Ballet from its earliest days and was at the time, the largest and most technologically advanced in the United States. The venue underwent a huge renovation following the cataclysmic 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and now boasts a modern yet luxurious interior, with disability access and various bars and booths for patrons to use during intermissions, making it both a local and international landmark in the world of theater.
