DIRECTOR SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIRED ON DAY ONE. TERRIBLE.

I can’t believe that Producers let this show tour like this. One of the worst I’ve ever seen. “Tell me what is happening?” indeed. The lead cast had to use microphones (some with stands, some with trailing cords – seriously?) It was just terrible. It totally removed any hope of connection between Jesus and “his” people, as he was singing behind a mic stand half the time. And the appalling choice of waving a DRILL(!) in the air before “nailing” a suffering Jesus’s hands to the cross – was this a time for comedy?? I couldn’t believe it. The choreography was too…I don’t even know what. The story line was impossible to follow. There was some medicine voodoo woman dancing around the whole show; Judas was difficult to understand; Mary had little to no emotion. Jesus pulled off some lovely audience connection at the end - which was a relief. But I don’t blame the cast for any of it. Almost any issues could have been fixed by a good director. This one needs to find a different job.

SUB-PAR

Had there been an intermission I would have left. From Jesus’ man-bun, the shrieking versus singing to the unconvincing Jesus and Mary Magdalene not even knowing Jesus, much less knowing how to love him, this was the worst production I have ever seen at Cincinnati Aronoff. The hand-held microphones with attached wires that almost tripped the actors was very distracting, but not as distracting as Jesus walking around with a guitar, removing it, putting it down, putting it back around his neck throughout the show without playing it!

WORST JCSS EVER

Singers were great. Seriously. Beautiful singing. That’s it. Everything else was bad.

JCD SAVE YOUR MONEY AND JUST STAY HOME

This was quite possibly the worst musical I’ve ever seen. It missed on so many levels and just left people laughing at its absurdity. Pialate dressed as a biker! It was the Rocky Horror Show version of JCD.

ARE THEY PROFESSIONALS?

The sound was horrible! Sound mixing in a million times easier with new technology. That said, there are better soloists on YouTube. The music is complex, so singers have to stick to the melody or understand improvisation. Almost every singer except for Mary wandered off pitch similar to the second round of American Idol tryouts. This is not indicative of the amazing singers that are in the Broadway community. Poor casting and staffing all around.

BAD DIRECTING, BAD LIGHTING, BAD SOUND

Considering this is supposed to be “Broadway” quality, this production lacked everything that would fall into that category. The first 1/4 of the show the players stood and sang directly to the audience either with a hand held mike or a mike stand. For 20 minutes the entire audience had no idea what characters were who or what was going on. There was barely any interaction between characters to establish relationships or to define who they were. The sound quality was awful (incoherent). Then all of a sudden a woman starts singing “I don’t know how to love him”. Nothing made sense theatrically. Ultimately they are supposed to be telling a story not singing or dancing at the audience. The lighting at the theater was awful - could barely make out the faces of the cast and it became a strain to watch. The songs were sung at breakneck speed and the whole thing was a mess. Save your money and don’t see this. Real disappointment.

THE WORST

Save your money, the worst disaster on stage, from sound tech to choreography to singing. The songs felt contrived and were drowned out by the music, staffing was poor, and nothing felt professional.
