Summer 2023 marks the return of Richard Strauss's seldom-seen opera, not performed by the San Francisco Opera in over 30 years. In this brand-new production featuring designs by British artist David Hockney, Strauss's fantasy tale is given a new lease of life offering many audiences a chance to enjoy live for the very first time.

What is the story?

When the Empress of an imaginary kingdom is contacted by the ruler of the spirit realm from whence she came, she is sent into a tailspin. Her challenge? Gain a human shadow in the next three days or return to the spirit world forever and watch her beloved husband turn to stone! With her happiness at the forefront, she sets out to steal a shadow from one of her subjects, with mixed results...
