Celebrating the father of American Ballet
George Balanchine has often been called the father of American ballet and was one of the founders and longstanding artistic director of the New York City Ballet. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art. Join San Francisco Ballet as they celebrate this visionary with a production featuring three of his greatest works!
Set to the music of Tchaikovsky, Diamonds is the third part of the choreographer's three-act work Jewels, described as the world's first abstract ballet. Also set to Tchaikovsky, Serenade was born from his teaching at the School of American Ballet and is now known is one of the hallmarks pieces of the famed New York City Ballet. Finally, Stars and Stripes celebrates Balanchine's love for the country that he called home. A sumptuous evening of dance.
