Water by the Spoonful

Water by the Spoonful at San Francisco Playhouse

Why see Water by the Spoonful?

2012 Pulitzer prize winner for drama

The San Francisco Playhouse returns with the 2021/22 season, their most important year yet. With a mixture of classic theatre, exciting world premieres, and a stupendous musical finale, it's gearing up to be another unforgettable season from the esteemed company. The penultimate production, from Tony Award (In The Heights) and Pultizer Prize winner Quiara Alegria Hudes, is this drama of addiction, family, and redemption.

What is the story?

Online, we can be whomever we want to be, and in a secretive chat group, Odessa is leading a recovery-based discussion forum. However in real life, her family life is falling apart at the seams, and her three other online friends are all suffering serious setbacks. Will their strong bond survive one of the members talking about his traumatic war experiences, and will they be able to rally around to help?

The support group is a place of jokes, gentle ribbing, and a way to bond with each other; however when Iraq War veteran Elliot shares a shocking tragedy with them in their safe space, everything changes. A fearless play that challenges notions of what strength and family truly mean, this story asks us to examine what truly makes a supportive community.

Addiction--Redemption-- Regrets. Powerful Acting. Recommend!

Dynamic thought-provoking play--simultaneously humorous and sad. I went last night on a comp ticket. ( I often pay for tickets as well--but maybe I can repay the cast this time by leaving a good review : ). It's still a pricey night with ubers involved so I do what I can.) It's a somewhat complicated story at first--which is rewarding when you see how everything comes together. Creative way to depict online interaction. The acting is excellent and the writing is dynamic and entertaining. It's very well done--they got a standing ovation at the end! The storyline is a glimpse of how our past can affect our future--themes are addiction, vulnerability, friendship, family relationships, struggles, redemption, overcoming adversity, acceptance and forgiveness. I keep thinking about the storyline and the characters--even the following day. SF playhouse is a special place--when I'm rich I'm going to buy season tickets full price to every show--and donate! ... Read more
