World premiere of Jessica Huang's Mother of Exiles
Jaki Bradley directs the world premiere of Jessica Huang's Mother of Exiles at the Berkeley Rep's Peet's Theatre. Developed with support from the Venturous Playwright Fellowship at Berkeley Rep's The Ground Floor in New York, the story spans 165 years, following one family across generations as they navigate a treacherous path to safety from the different forces seeking to exile them.
In the late 1800s Eddie Loi is an immigrant in San Francisco's Angel Island, faced with the very real danger of expulsion from the US as the country tightens its immigration laws. 100 years later her grandson works for the border force in Miami, and accidentally unleashes a ghostly apparition of Loi's stubborn, assertive spirit. Fast forward to 2063 and climate change is the new enemy, with the same family's descendants now all at sea searching for safety.
