Pulitzer-nominated satire gets West Coast premiere
Contemporary satire meets historical drama in the hilarious, Pulitzer Prize nominated play Meet The Cartozians. Written by Talene Monahon and directed by Loretta Greco, the play gets its West Coast premiere after a critically lauded won which saw multiple Drama Desk Award nominations and acclaim in the New York Times among many others. Loosely spoofing the Kardashians, the brilliant play unpacks, with a comical eye, the fight for cultural identity in America.
Meet The Cartozians spans a century, and is inspired by the real life 1925 court case of Tartos Cartozian, an Armenian-born man who, with the Armenian genocide still terrifyingly fresh in the memory, has his US citizenship revoked owing to legal uncertainty surrounding the geographical legal status of his birth country. Just over a century later, a group of Armenian Americans are preparing to be interviewed for the reality TV show Meet The Cartozians, whose star is a distant relative of Tartos. In this era, what kind of relationship does this generation of Armenians have to their heritage?
