Micheal Tilson Thomas conducts Mahler's stunning Ninth Symphony
The San Fransisco Symphony and their fearless Music Director, the celebrated American conductor Micheal Tilson Thomas, present their stunning interpretation of Mahler's rapturously bittersweet 9th Symphony. Praised for its lyrical radiance and almost bel canto opera-like approach in which each instrument sings their lines with warmth and intensity, this Ninth more than does justice to the composer's final sonic flourish.
Completed in 1809, the symphony was written towards the end of the late-Romantic era giant's life and as such, its introspective yet epic farewell to the world he dearly loved. Written in the wake of his daughter's death whilst coming to terms with his own heart condition, it begins slowly with passionate melodies and haunting chromaticism, ending even more slowly as the music exquisitely fades out to eternal silence.
