A witty exploration of Iraqi heritage and survival
Iraq, But Funny is a witty exploration of Iraqi heritage and survival, penned by Atra Asdou.
Directed by Dalia Ashurina, this production challenges traditional Middle Eastern narratives as told in the West, by centering the often-overlooked humor and resilience of the Assyrian community. A glimpse into a culture frequently defined by conflict rather than its vibrancy, Asdou reclaims the stage to hilariously interrogate history.
Iraq, But Funny is a witty exploration of Iraqi heritage and survival, penned by Atra Asdou.
The story follows five generations of Assyrian women as they journey from the collapse of the Ottoman Empire to the complexities of modern-day America. Their attempt to control their own legacy is constantly interrupted by a satirical "British guy", played by Asdou herself, whose narration embodies the persistent re-writing of history by colonial forces.
