Noises Off

Noises Off at San Francisco Playhouse

Why see Noises Off?

The Beloved British Comedy

San Francisco Playhouse's 2025/26 Season gets off to a rollicking start with English playwright Michael Frayn's riotous comedy Noises Off, starting performances this September! The quintessentially British farce brings an ensemble cast to the stage in a whirlwind of banter and expertly-timed physical comedy that'll have you rolling in the aisles and wiping away tears of laughter.

What Is The Story?

First performed in 1982, this iconic, Olivier Award-winning play is the ultimate tribute to the unpredictability of the theatre. The story starts mere hours before the opening of an adult comedy romp called Nothing On, while a touring company hurriedly runs through a final dress rehearsal. The cast is loveable but entirely inept, and even though they can't remember their lines, entrances, and exits, you can't help but root for them as they attempt to put on a shambles of a show. If you enjoyed last season's The Play That Goes Wrong, you'll love Noises Off!

Delightful "technicals"

You must read the playbill for Nothing's On before the show. You must appreciate the setup of stage direction in the first part of the first act. You must pee beforehand on peril of stress incontinence. I am not usually one for slapstick, but my face and belly hurt from laughing during the overwhelming choreography of the "behind the scenes" portion. You will want to watch each and every player carefully-- in sum, their performances are actually multiplicative. Although the effect is perceived chaos, you too will enjoy the precision with which it is executed. May you attend the show and always have a plate (or five) of sardines. ... Read more
