San Francisco Symphony - Boris Godunov

San Francisco Symphony - Boris Godunov at Davies Symphony Hall

Why see San Francisco Symphony - Boris Godunov?

The Perils of Power

MTT takes the helm for this semi-staged performance of Mussorgsky's multi-layered masterpiece. His only completed opera, the twisting story examines the interplay of power, determination, and treachery during a tumultuous time in Russian history.

Based on Alexander Pushkin's epic play and true events, the titular Boris refers to 16th Century Tsar Boris Godunov, whose short yet chaotic reign fell between the end of one great Dynasty and the start of Russia's last, that of the famed Romanov's.

With costume, scenery and lighting design and of course, Mussorgsky's prodigious score, the San Francisco bring fresh life to this venerated work.
