Balanchine remembered

The works of George Balanchine form the main focus in this triple programme. All choreographed by the late dance master himself, the first act of the evening is his Stravinsky Violin Concerto, created for two couples in contrasting pas de deux whilst following the exact composition of the music. Although it first premiered at the New York City Ballet in 1972, it wasn't until 1995 that SF Ballet performed the work. His 1929 work Prodigal Son is based on the Biblical story from the Book of St Luke, an exploration of sin and final redemption; it premiered by the Company in 1984 and this will be its first performance since 2001. The final excerpt, Diamonds, is taken from his glittering ballet Jewels, an ode to the lavish days of Imperial Russia, danced by couples, demi-soloists and of course, featuring the whole corps de ballet in a stunning finale.
