Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is widely regarded as a landmark in international cinema. Released in 2000, the film earned multiple Academy Awards, including Best Original Score. Composed by Tan Dun and featuring celebrated cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the soundtrack is both sweeping and intimate, weaving traditional Chinese instrumentation with Western orchestral elements. In this live-to-picture performance, the San Francisco Symphony, conducted by Sarah Hicks, performs the score in real time alongside a screening of the film!

Set in Qing Dynasty China, the story follows warrior Li Mu Bai and his longtime companion Yu Shu Lien as they pursue a stolen sword while confronting past rivalries. Blending martial arts action with a poetic narrative and, of course, an unforgettable musical score, for one of the greatest cinematic experiences of its age.
