Steely Dan

Why see Steely Dan?

earth after hours tour

With music characterized by complex jazz-influenced structures and harmonies, Steely Dan's Donald Fagen and the late Walter Becker were famed for their cerebral, wry and eccentric lyrics. Despite the avant-garde nature of their music, their musical marriage turned out to be a winning formula - they have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide, and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001.

Once reclusive, the band now tours more than they ever did in their heyday, dusting off the classics and reinventing them in a way only Steely Dan can. Following the passing of Walter Becker in 2017, the line up currently consists of Donald Fagan and a group of expertly talented musicians. Expect genre-bending, virtuosic interludes, and of course, that trademark groove. Don't miss them live in 2020 on the Earth After Hours tour, where they will once again be joined by Steve Winwood!

Better then Ever

It was my 8th or 9th show and it was as good as any. Keith Carlock stole the show. And that is really saying something with all the great players on that stage. The crescendos at the end of Bodhisatva were worth the price of admission alone. They stellar, peerless sound was no more evident then in the drum set it self. You could hear each piece evenly. You could hear the high regestries in the crash cymbols. They introduced Carlock last. Very strong set list though I'm not a fan of Godwhacker. Great dark cool funky re-working of Your Gold Teeth II and Show Biz kids. The only negatives were Aja - it still doesn't have the xylophones part - and the great background vocals. They weren't loud enough. But other then that what a joy. I keep on threatening to buy the 250$ seats some year. Next tour I may do it. The playing, songs, and sound somehow, are getting better. ... Great Show - Improve Sound

Loved the show at the Concord Pavilion California last night! But also agree on sound quality - muffled at times! This is our third show and loves it when the music is crystal clear! ... Read more

Great room, tight band, crowd of slobs...

DATELINE: Venetian Theater, 4/28/19 After many thwarted attempts to see the band live, me and the misses settled in the lovely and acoustically solid VT. The entire performance was reminiscent of an old school R&B jazz review which should be no surprise. Excellent set list that covered all the bases albeit the inclusion of "FM" (too Top 40 considering the band's deep catalog, but easily digestible for the audience) and "Dirty Work" which is a tremendous song with David Palmer's plaintive vocal but "lounge-y" as done by the female backup artists. With the exception of hard core Dan fans and budding music students (a master class if ever there was one) the crowd appeared to be ancient Midwesterner's who on a lark dropped by on their way to the Kwik-E-Mart to get a gallon of vanilla ice cream and Hershey's syrup. (See: FM) with no thought of stepping out. Perhaps Nevada's lax cannabis law accounted for the malaise but methinks 8:00pm was bedtime for many. Too bad, great show! ... Read more
