Truly a spectacular performance
I have heard MTT conduct the SFS in Mahler's 5th four times. This was unquestionably the greatest performance of that work I've ever heard him conduct. The opening funeral march was dignified and arresting, the adagietto was gorgeous (its conclusion was beautifully sustained to the point of silence), and the finale of the 5th movement was joyous and exhilarating. In short it was a memorable performance. MTT did not even open the score on the podium. He was in masterful and total control throughout, and his smiles showed him to be pleased with what the orchestra was doing at various points in the score. The orchestral playing was superb. While occasional quavers were audible, the percussion, principal clarinet, strings, and brass shone brilliantly. Mahler and Leonard Bernstein would have been pleased with this performance. In my opinion, MTT is now unmatched as an interpreter of Mahler's works. His conducting last night was visibly passionate and committed, not cool and detached. BRAVO!
