Why See San Francisco Opera: Die Meistersinger?

The best singer gets the girl

A young knight, Walther arrives in Nuremberg full of hope for a new life. When he falls for the beautiful Eva, he finds his path to marriage blocked by her father and his strange edict that Eva shall marry the winner of the Mastersinger Contest. So under the mentorship of famed poet and singer Hans Sachs, he sets out to prove himself, try to win the concert and secure Eva's hand. The only problem is, in a renaissance town like Nuremberg, Matstersingers see themselves akin to craftsmen and adhere to a set of strict rules concerning composing and performing that take years to learn...

Wagner's five hour epic was a departure from his usual supernatural operas and marked his only comic contribution to the canon. Despite its length it is still very popular today, and is perfomed all over the world. San Francisco Opera present this classic Sir David McVicar production, starring a host of talent including two San Francisco Opera favorites, Greer Grimsley as Hans Sachs and Brandon Jovanovich as Walther.
