Why See San Francisco Opera - Roberto Devereux?

History belongs to her, but does her heart?

The mightiest of Donizetti's Three Queens may rule the country but her heart is the dominion of one man, Roberto Devereux, the Earl of Essex. But Her Majesty's secret passions are stilled when she discovers he loves another. With Roberto marked as a traitor to the crown, the furious Monarch must temper her jealousy and choose between her duty and her feelings.

Raw, enthralling and shatteringly emotional, it is often hailed as Donizetti's finest opera. This historically based story will delight those interested in the famous Tudor dynasty - England's most passionate and intriguing Royal family.

Sondra Radvanovsky dons Elizabeth's ruff for this production, reprising the role from the Metropolitan Opera's 2015/16 season, where she became the first person ever to play all three of Donizetti's heroines consecutively.
