“WOKE” - LAHOMA

I know theater sees itself as needing to challenge what it believes is socially problematic, but this production was just unenjoyable. “Brilliantly reimagined” may be a New York opinion, but this version needs to be genuinely described as a cancel culture attack on the original. I’m disappointed in the Peace Center’s decision to include this production in the Broadway Series. I would not recommend this show to anyone looking to enjoy a nice evening at the theater.

WORSE MUSICAL I HAVE EVER SEEN

Wouldn’t sit through this show again even if it was free! I have seen more talented actors and actresses on high school and community theater stages. The singing was average, choreography was amateurish—what you might expect from productions that have to use actors/actresses who really don’t know how to dance—NOT professional musical theater actors/actresses. In Greenville Ado Annie played by SIS was HORRIBLE! No acting ability to deliver comedic role. Average voice. Does not belong in the role. Her understudy—Hannah Solow— would fill the role with more spunky and humor. Very disappointing. If you want to butcher an original musical then just create your own original musical. There was virtually zero stage energy. Most actors/actresses appeared to just be going through the motions. I get some scenes were directed to be delivered in a very monotone manner—just another misstep in my opinion. Many patrons left before the second act. I stuck through the entire show out of respect for the act form but WOW…still stunned at how horrible it was the next dat.

OKLAHOMA

Of all the many many shows I have seen at the Peace Center over the years, this is the first time I left at intermission. It looked like a high school production. The actors looked bored too. The revamping of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s play totally destroyed it - in my opinion.

TOTAL DISAPPOINTING

I was so excited to take my wife to one of favorites. She said at intermission we can leave anytime you would like. The first act was as boring as any play I’ve ever been to. We stayed hoping it would get better. The modern dance add to start second act was the biggest mystery ever. The music and the 2 group dance segments were great and the only thing resembling Oklahoma. I was expecting it to be modernized to fit todays woke theme however at least keep it in the same ballpark. When I walked in the Peace Center my first thought was that looks like a high school stage. It never changed. The costumes make this play and they totally blow that. Please get the igglo coolers off the stage and at least use the real thing. Really wish I liked it but I felt robbed.

LEFT AT INTERMISSION

My wife and I are multiyear Annual Broadway subscribers at the Peace Center as well as having seen over 20 plays in New York, and we have never walked out on any play at intermission until this dark depressing version of Oklahoma! After the first 20 minutes, I felt like none of the actors wanted to be on stage (Ado Annie was the only one who had any kind of energy).. Although the songs were familiar, the context and story line drained any sense of meaning from them. In addition to the drab stage presence, the dialogue was practically unintelligible because you could NOT hear them! The sound quality was terrible. I know that the Peace Center is not responsible for a bad act, but they ARE responsible for making sure that the actors can be heard. Very disappointed!

RUINATION OF A CHERISHED CLASSIC

I could find very little of redeeming value in this heavily modified from the original revival. Unexciting staging, unenthusiastic performers, a country band in place of a traditional orchestra, a deeply darkened version of a much more uplifting original story, unconvincing acting, poor voice amplification, uninteresting choreography, confusing story line (script) poor stage direction and I could go on. And it was not just me. The limited applause and audience comments made departing the theater offered corroboration.
