SEDUCED BY HER ALBUMS - BUT HER LIVE PERFORMANCE A DISAPPOINTING FAIL (9/25/2022)
I have been a fan of Diana Krall for decades. Her voice was that of muse whose voice touched parts of my soul like no other. Her tunes have resonated thoughout my space when I needed to decompress and chill.
Suffice it to say, I was so thrilled and anxious to see her perform live in Sugar Land, TX at the state of the art SMART FINANCIAL CENTER.
Her performance, from the very start, lacked energy. It appeared that she forgot that she was the performer for this event. Her voice did not have the magical, and passionate, quality that I was accustomed to.
With the exception of a few of her standards, all her music was new to me. Additionally, she appeared to rely on the solo performances of her group (bassist, drummer and guitarist) to carry her and fill in most of the time. They were remarkable. This said, they were not the reason I spent so much for the two tickets I purchased.
I couldn't believe that her set was over for what was approximately an hour and a half. Surely, she would come back for an encore performance. She did, it was one song and she left.
If you are a Diana Krall fan, remain one by just continuing to listen to her albums and don't have a live performance destroy the illusion you have of her.

DIANA KRALL
Very disappointed in her energy and appearance. Her hair covered her face like "cousin It". She wore a dress that covered her entire body. She never got off her piano chair. The quartet didn't do her any justice. We left after 1 hour, it got boring and it all sounded the same. She needs to be more personable, energetic, show off her beauty more, get more instruments in her orchestra to make it more exciting. I should have brought my lazyboy chair so I could take a nap. Waist on money. Her music is better than average but performance is a failure. I hope she gets my feedback; I doubt it

WHAT WAS THAT?
Love her albums but the concert was so disappointing. First couple of songs felt very unorganized. Momentum picked up after that and her band definitely saved the show. Felt like I was watching an informal jam session. Not like her albums. Didn’t know if I should be feeling sorry for her and maybe she’s been sick? No clue. My need for sleep on a workday evening became priority and we left early.

Very disappointed. what comes to mind is "What has happened to Diana?" either her voice has become strained through the years or she had a cold ravaging her voice her whispering through her songs was irritation. the set she put together did nothing to showcase her previous(?) vocals. If her concerts no longer are up to the standards her fan base hope for it may be best to cancel.

NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED
Concert got a late start, way too much jamming by band and not enough of the vocalist that we paid to see. She didn't play anything from the American Songbook that hse is known for which was quite disappointing. Concert was really short too. Kind of felt like she was just phoning it in. We spent a great deal to attend this previously cancelled show- train tickets, hotel, meals- really wasn't worth it. Love her music and her style but sure didn't get to see it on 10/6 /22 in Chicago.

DISILLUSIONED FAN
From listening to Diana Krall's recordings and admiring her lovely voice and sexappeal, I was expecting to see an engaging performance from her and was hoping at some point, she would be the star of her own show! I was surprised that she didn't step away from her piano to sing to the audience -- who was there to see Diana --- not her musicians as the stars of the concert. It seemed as though she wanted to be in the background the whole time. Some artists are better in the studio than on stage, and from this experience, it appears that Diana was not that comfortable performing live. At least that was the case Saturday evening at The Riverside.

FIRST TIME
This was my first concert with her. The musicians were very talented and robust. And since I have never seen her before, there is a possibility that my view of her is just her personality, but it almost seemed like she was drugged...? The little that she sang was sultry but slurred, she seemed disorganized and the concert just didn't have a main personality leading the show. When she talked, I became even more concerned for her welfare. It was just the oddest concert I've ever been to and not all what I expected from her in comparison to her recordings. Perhaps she is just very crowd shy and it is easier to record than perform, however, had there been an intermission, we would have left. As it was, when they finished, lots of folks left and did not wait for oncor. But just to be fair, it was 10 pm on Weds by that time and maybe folks just needed to get home. For progressive jazz, this is a very talented group! Just not very entertaining to this couple, at least. Your mileage may vary.
