Bay Area Beginnings
A program renowned as providing tuition-free orchestral training for gifted young musicians, this season the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra celebrates its 35th anniversary. November will bring to Davies Symphony Hall an anticipated performance under the baton of Wattis Foundation Music Director and the youth orchestra's mentor, Christian Reif.
The pre-professional setting of the youth orchestra is used to nurture the talents of a select group of instrumentalists who are chosen through an audition process. The San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra rehearse under the guidance of Reif, and in addition, the players are privileged to be coached on a weekly basis by San Francisco Symphony musicians, honing their crafts learning from those they aspire to be.
Presented to audiences in the first of this season's youth orchestra performances will be Rachmaninoff's enchanting Piano Concerto No. 2 featuring Leyla Kabuli on piano, as well as Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations, and Detlev Glanert's American Prelude No. 1.
