Why See San Francisco Symphony - MTT Conducts Bernstein and Strauss?
Jean-Yves Thibaudet Performs Bernstein's Sombre Age Of Anxiety
Join resident music director Michael Tilson Thomas as he conducts the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra in a rousing evening of works by Bernstein and Strauss. They'll be joined by piano virtuoso Jean-Yves Thibaudet, a musician of such high calibre he's been described as one of the greatest pianists in the world.
The evening opens with Bernstein's The Age of Anxiety, an emotionally poignant symphony for orchestra and solo piano inspired by W.H. Auden's poem in which four lonely strangers meet at a bar and try to foster human connection. This will be followed by Strauss' Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life), an orchestrally demanding, autobiographical tone poem that soars as triumphantly as its composer's self-esteem.
Opening night: 2 November 2017
