Raucously funny and poignant at the same time
Loved it! It's a fresh and modern take on the Vietnamese immigrant experience, yet universal enough for all ages and ethnic bakegrounds to enjoy. I saw the premier in OC with a senior white crowd and the play got a deserved standing ovation. I saw Part 1, Vietgone, but you don't need to see it to enjoy this one. General warning that there is more profanity in this play than in Vietgone but I don't think its gratuitous given the intensity of some of the emotions explored on stage.
Contrived, Overwrought, Inconsistent
I loved Vietgone at ACT several years ago but did not enjoy Poor Yella Rednecks at all. Nguyen utilizes an absurd combination of theatrical gimmicks, substituting them for meaningful narrative and character development, and leaves the play lacking in both comedic and dramatic consistency and weight. I was surprised to see what felt like a high school production come from such an experienced writer...
