New production!
Known as Berloiz' most ambitious works, San Francisco Opera present the David McVicar production of this vast epic, bringing together The Fall of Troy & The Trojans at Carthage in an ambitious and monumental staging that has been referred to as the largest and most visually striking opera ever mounted.
Inspired by Virgil's The Aeneid, The Trojans was Berloiz last masterpiece. Pushing the boundaries of a grand opera, the piece combined runs for over five hours, as the story melds imperceptibly with the excitingly visceral score, taking us on the journey of the Trojans, from their first interaction with the famed wooden horse, to years of exile as they head to establish a new capital in Italy. At it's heart is the romance between the warrior King Aeneas and the powerful Queen of Carthage, Dido. But how will love fair in the face of destiny and interference from the gods. Rarely performed, this really is a sumptuous treat for the eyes and ears and is not to be missed by fans and newcomers alike.
